Pass a resolution to implement political solutions: K Therie

Dimapur, November 5 (MExN): Former Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee President, K Therie, has urged the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) to pass a resolution to “cooperate with the Government of India (GoI) in the implementation of the negotiated agreements” related to the Naga political issue.

The top priority for the people of Nagaland should be a “peaceful solution,” one that transcends religious divisions, political boundaries, factional differences, and tribal divides, he held in a statement received here.

Referring to the Framework Agreement signed between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM), he noted that it was the outcome of over 100 rounds of talks spanning 19 years.

Therie, a former Finance Minister of the State, also questioned whether key elements such as the demand for a separate flag and constitution could have been overlooked during the drafting and signing of the agreement, suggesting that this has weakened public trust.

He remarked that while NSCN (IM) General Secretary Th. Muivah has his own compulsions, in a democracy, “the people’s aspiration is the final law.”

Therie criticised Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for the Political Affairs Committee’s decision, under his chairmanship, to seek the appointment of a new interlocutor at the ministerial level for fresh talks—an initiative reportedly rejected by the Union Home Ministry in September 2025.

According to Therie, the GoI’s continued wait for Muivah’s approval to implement the agreements for Nagaland is “uncalled for,” claiming that he is a “Manipur State subject.”

To this end, he asserted that the matter now lies between the GoI and the Nagaland State Government, as both the NSCN (IM) and NNPGs continue to uphold the Framework Agreement and the Agreed Position.

Therie emphasised that while Nagas share historical and emotional ties, it is important for each state to assert its own rights within the Indian Union.

He further stated that Chief Minister Rio and his government have long promised an “honourable and acceptable solution,” and since the agreements were signed on those terms, they must now be implemented.

“People do not append their signatures in disagreement,” Therie said, reiterating that it is appropriate for the Nagaland Legislative Assembly to pass a resolution to cooperate with the Government of India in implementing the negotiated agreements.
