A protest against attack on students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was foiled on January 7 by the police in Manipur University.
On January 5, a group including masked men, armed with stones, sticks and iron rods attacked students at JNU, injuring scores of students and staff of the university. Students across the country have been protesting against the attack on the students of the university.
Joining the nationwide protest, alumni of JNU from Manipur and students of various colleges staged a peaceful demonstration at the Manipur University on Tuesday. The demonstration also showed solidarity to all the campuses across the country hit by violence since the protest against Citizenship (Amendment) Act erupted.
“Down with state sponsored goodaism”, “Shame on Delhi police”, “Save public education”, etc were some of the slogans used during the protest in Manipur University. The demonstrators also raised various slogans against the attack on students of universities besides singing a "protest song" by some of them. The protest was, however, dispersed by the police later.
Talking to reporters, one of the alumni of JNU taking part in the protest said that the peaceful demonstration was being organised in solidarity with the students of the JNU as well as those university students who are victimised by the violence unleashed in the university campuses across the country. He said, “Alumni of the JNU from Manipur will continue to show solidarity to the JNU students."
He expressed concern over the violence unleashed in the education sector saying that “times are dangerous today and winds of change seemingly is blowing to tumble down even the walls of learning.”
Even on Monday night, students of Manipur University staged a candlelight vigil in solidarity with the JNU students and condemned the "terrorising act of the goons" at JNU campus.
The students staged the candlelight vigil at the main gate of the university under the banner of the Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU). During the vigil, the students displayed various placards.
