PSU demands repeal of AFSPA after alleged misconduct by security forces

Phek, March 13 (MExN): The Phek Students’ Union (PSU) on Friday condemned an incident that occurred during a raid conducted by 39 Assam Rifles on March 12 evening, alleging that its general secretary was “publicly blamed and treated as a suspect for alleged association with a faction.”

PSU in a condemnation said that such an act of discrimination and accusation in the public domain has deeply hurt not only the individual concerned but also the dignity of the union and the citizens of Phek.

The PSU stated that prior to the posting of the present battalion, the relationship between the citizens of Phek, including various organisations and the administration of both the police and the armed forces had always remained cordial, respectful and peaceful, with no such incidents occurring in the past.

However, it claimed that with “the replacement of the battalion and the recent unexpected actions,” the goodwill and hospitality of the people of Phek are being undermined. “The use of force and the manner in which the operation was carried out in the public domain have greatly disturbed the peaceful coexistence of the people of Phek Village,” PSU stated.

The union said such actions threaten the peace of mind of the public, irrespective of age or gender, and create unnecessary fear among law-abiding citizens.

The PSU reiterated its opposition to the enforcement of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Phek district, stating that its continuation was “unnecessary and reflects a lack of concern for the sentiments and safety of the people of Phek.”

According to the union, the people of Phek are known for their honesty, hospitality and peaceful nature, and since the ceasefire agreement between Naga factions and the Government of India, no conflict or disturbance had occurred in the area.

In light of these circumstances, PSU urged the Government of India to reconsider and withdraw AFSPA from Phek district, stating that the continued presence of such extraordinary powers could lead to misuse and unintentionally damage the relationship between the armed forces and civilians.

The PSU also called on the concerned authorities to take necessary and appropriate actions at the earliest in order to restore public confidence, maintain peace, and uphold the dignity of the citizens of Phek.
