More blockade looms over Manipur

Imphal, September 9 (NNN):
Even as the blockade sponsored by Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) and the counter blockade called by the United Naga Council (UNC) are underway in Manipur, another fresh blockade is in the offing. The Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC) has resolved to impose a weeklong economic blockade along the NH-37, former known as NH-53 from September 16. And within this weeklong economic blockade if the state government fails to grant Jiribam a full-fledged district then the JDDC will impose 'total blockade' for ten days immediately. By 'total blockade', the JDDC means movements of any type of vehicles. Jiribam is a subdivision located in the Manipur-Assam border. Meanwhile, the Manipur State cabinet in a meeting today decided to start deploying state forces adequately for escorting trucks that are bringing essential commodities through NH-37 from Saturday. If need be, paramilitary forces will also be used, added a source.
