Rice pest alert in Kiphire

Dimapur, August 23 (MExN): Pest incidences in wetland rice fields have affected eight villages in Kiphire district. The pest was first reported in 2009 but it is only now that the malady has been identified Dr. Akashe Zhimomi of the Agriculture department informed. The affected villages are Nikiye, Thazuvi, Yangsekyu Nitoi, Zuvishe, Kiyezhe, Natsa and Langzang.
According to a note from Dr. Zhimomi, the pest has been identified as Rice Hispa (dicladispa armigera). The same case was reported in 2009 but the farmers could not identify it nor there any scientific advice to control the pest.
On receiving information about the outbreak, a team of experts was assembled by the DAO & PD. An on-spot investigation was carried out on August 18 and identified the pest. Some farmers’ fields have been completely devastated, Dr. Zhimomi said. “The team trained and recommended scientific ways of control measures to the farmers. The team of experts also advised the farmers to request the GB and council members to organize mass participation in the implementation of control measure,” the note said.
As the nature of the damage from the pest is severe, the note said, the district administration and the department in concern are needed. Dr. Zhimomi appealed for immediate intervention to control the pest from spreading to other regions of the district and state.
