Demands accountability from school
DIMAPUR, APRIL 11 (MExN): The Rengma Students’ Union (RSU), Dimapur Rengma Youth Organisation (DRYO), Rengma Selo Zi (RSZ) and Rengma Mothers Association (RMA) have condemned the alleged assault of a Class 10 student of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (DBHSS), Kohima, and demanded immediate accountability from the school authorities.
According to the organisations, the student was reportedly assaulted outside the school premises on February 20 while in full school uniform and is currently in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Guwahati.
In a statement, the RSU alleged that the student was "mercilessly assaulted outside the school premises” following an issue that originated within the school campus.
Calling the assault “heinous” and “inhumane,” the RSU questioned the school’s failure to ensure student safety. “What concrete steps has the school authority taken to address bullying both on and off campus?” it asked, terming the incident a “glaring failure of responsibility” on the part of the institution.
The DRYO, citing reports, said the attack allegedly began with verbal abuse and threats before escalating to repeated physical blows, including to the head and abdomen. It expressed concern over the lack of intervention despite the incident occurring during school hours, and urged a comprehensive investigation into the school’s security measures and administrative response.
Meanwhile, the RSZ, the apex youth body of the Rengma Nagas, termed the assault “barbaric and brutal” and urged the school to fully cooperate with the investigation while ensuring the protection and identity of the students involved.
The three organisations also called on the school authority to take immediate and transparent action against the accused individuals and sought the implementation of stricter disciplinary measures.
The school was further urged to conduct a thorough review of its safety protocols and to establish effective anti-bullying programmes to prevent such incidents in the future.
“Educational institutions must be safe spaces, not environments where fear and violence are allowed to thrive,” the RSU said. “A culture of silence and inaction in the face of such incidents cannot be tolerated.”
The Rengma Mothers Association (RMA) urged the concerned authorities and law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served swiftly and the culprits are held accountable under the law. “The school administration must also take decisive action to investigate the matter thoroughly and prevent such incidents from recurring,” the RMA demanded. It said that violence has no place in schools, and any form of aggression must be met with zero tolerance. “We stand in solidarity with the victim and his family during this difficult time and demand that justice be delivered without delay,” RMA added.
