Sainik School Punglwa hosts East Zone football championship, Imphal dominates

Officials give away the trophy to the winners during the Group E All India Sainik Schools National Games – Football Championship held at Sainik School Punglwa, Peren on April 9.

Punglwa, April 9 (MExN): The Group E All India Sainik Schools National Games – Football Championship concluded at Sainik School Punglwa on Thursday after four days of competition among cadets from five schools of the East Zone.

Participating institutions included Sainik School Goalpara, Sainik School Imphal, Sainik School Chhingchhip, Sainik School East Siang and host Sainik School Punglwa.

The closing ceremony was attended by Group Commander of NCC Group Headquarters, Kohima, Brig Shantanu P Mainkar as the chief guest. He was received by Principal Col (Dr) Smita Misra.

The highlight of the final day was the U-17 final between Sainik School Imphal and Sainik School East Siang, where Imphal secured a narrow 1-0 victory.

In other finals, Sainik School Imphal won the U-15 boys’ title, defeating East Siang 1-0, while Sainik School East Siang retained the U-17 girls’ championship with a 2-0 win over Sainik School Punglwa.

The winning teams will go on to represent the East Zone (Group E) in the intra-group stage of the All India Sainik Schools National Games Football Championship.

Among individual honours, Cadet Gaurobi Das of East Siang was named best player in the U-17 girls’ category, while Cadet Maisnam Tabungba of Imphal and Cadet Bompin Gangkak of East Siang received the best player awards in the U-15 and U-17 boys’ categories respectively.

Best goalkeeper awards were given to Cadet Kothunee D Zeruiah of Punglwa in the U-17 girls’ category, Cadet Penngam T Yaoham of Punglwa in the U-15 boys’ category, and Cadet Nisith N Saikia of Goalpara in the U-17 boys’ category.

Addressing the gathering, the chief guest congratulated the winners and commended the cadets for their discipline, sportsmanship and competitive spirit. He emphasised the importance of such events in shaping future leaders and advised players to reflect on their performances to improve further.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Vice Principal Lt Col Amit Chaudhary, followed by the ceremonial lowering of flags, marking the end of the championship.
