Dimapur, August 22 (MExN): The 3-day global conference on disaster management in Shillong, organised by IIM Shillong, International Trauma Care and North East Council, got underway on August 20. In the inauguration ceremony held at NEC auditorium, Nongrim Hills, Shillong, the conference, aptly called, International Trauma Care 2011 was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma.
Speaking on the occasion, the CM appreciated the stellar role of Indian Institute of Management, Shillong under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Ashoke K Dutta Director IIM Shillong, in offering good quality management education, research and entrepreneurship training in the North Eastern region of India, stated a press note.
The note stated that the chief minister was very appreciable of the International Trauma Care (India) and North East Council (NEC) in their role in preparing doctors and paramedics for disaster management and safe Health Care delivery to all. He mentioned that it was the first occasion where IIM Shillong, Government of Meghalaya and International Trauma Care India, were undertaking this massive exercise for the benefit of entire northeast region.
Also, Dr Sangma extended a warm welcome to all participants of CTLS International and asked them to carry the knowledge and skills learned over next three days far and wide, especially to more rural and unreachable parts of the region. He complimented the course director, Dr Michael J A Parr from Sydney, Australia and his faculty team for providing this unprecedented educational framework of to train and nurture trauma and disaster specialists in Shillong.
The meeting witnessed the launch of Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) Programme and EESC toolkit for Meghalaya by Dr Meena Nathan Cherian from World Health Organisation HQ Geneva. Dr Cherian, in her introductory speech, expressed her happiness in the overwhelming response of Govt of Meghalaya led by the Hon’ble Chief Minister and RGIIM, under the dynamic leadership of Prof Ashoke K Dutta to inspire a programme , which could propel local, regional, and national health professionals to focus efforts to increase education, safety, and capacity in the provision of surgical, anaesthetic, and obstetric care at first-level health facilities.
The programme concluded with a musical performance by Aroha Choir, which again mesmerised the audience with their breathtaking performance, the press note said.
