
Medziphema | September 10 : Students’ Union of School of Agricultural Sciences & Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University, Medziphema, observed its 17th annual freshers’ social on Saturday with Nagaland commissioner & secretary to chief minister and Power department, L Kire, IFS, as the chief guest.
Project director & assistant director general (Agriculture Knowledge Management), ICAR, New Delhi, Dr. TP Trivedi, graced the occasion as guest of honour.
The chief guest in his address stressed on the importance of agri and allied studies in a state like Nagaland where agriculture is the mainstay of the state’s economy.
Acknowledging the contribution of SASRD in varied agricultural activities of the state, Kire said that the infrastructure of the campus has undergone a sea change since his last visit.
Noting that female students slightly outnumber their male counterparts, the commissioner & secretary said that this was indicative of the role of women as food securer and provider in Naga society.
Kire further expressed happiness that students from all Northeastern states as well as other parts of India are studying in SASRD, which he said would also promote national in integration.
Dr. TP Trivedi who also addressed SASRD students, dwelled on the importance of agriculture in the country’s economy and how the agri sector has advanced since the beginning of the Green Revolution. Trivedi said that even during the recent economic recession, the agriculture sector had registered 3% growth.
Dean, SASRD (NU), Prof. RC Nayak delivered the welcome address and students’ welfare in-charge, Dr. L Daiho, also exhorted the students.
Highlights of the freshers social included self-introduction of freshers, speeches by both freshers and senior students and special numbers presented by the students.
Among others, director of Central Institute of Horticulture, Dr. Akali Sema, staff and faculty of SASRD attended the freshers social.
