‘There is a great threat to the Constitution by BJP’

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) today joined a nationwide ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ (Save the Constitution) campaign to safeguard constitutional values and promote social justice.

Christopher Tilak, AICC secretary in-charge of Nagaland, Manipur & Tripura said that Nagaland has today joined the ‘Samvidhan Bachao,’ a campaign to educate voters of India about the evolution of the Constitution, rights which are enshrined in it and the legacy of the Congress party.

“There is a great threat to the Constitution by the BJP which is ideologically led by the RSS,” he alleged while addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan, Kohima today.

BJP in the last 10 years has violated the Constitution to the maximum possible, particularly in the NE, he said. He said Manipur is a typical case where BJP demeaned all democratic institutions.

Tilak noted that there has also been “enormous” constitutional violation in Nagaland and other NE states. “In this backdrop, it is important for us to re-educate and to agitate and to mobilize people around this concept of saving the Constitution,” he said.

In the next one or two months, the Congress is planning to take this agitation to the district and assembly constituency level through door to door campaign.

‘BJP trying to disrupt Constitution’
NPCC President and Lok Sabha MP, S Supongmeren Jamir accused the BJP-led government of governing India under the shadow of the RSS.

“Now, slowly, systematically, they (BJP led Government) are trying to dislodge and then disrupt the Constitution of India by imposing One Nation, One Election,” Jamir said. They are trying to impose ‘One Nation, One Language’ and ‘One Nation, One Religion,’ he said.

Reiterating the NPCC’s protest against the recent order issued on April 13 for transfer and posting of the administrative officers in Nagaland, Jamir said “It is directly influencing the RSS policies, even in our state.” The Congress and the people of Nagaland should not allow the state government to function as per the directive of the RSS, he added.

Of course, transfer and posting of the officers is under the purview of the state, but the date (Sunday), the non-working day should not be used, he argued.

Stating that the state government is yet to respond  to its representation till date, Jamir said the NPCC will be calling its executives and office bearers to step up for the course of action.

NPCC working President C Apok Jamir said that the ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ will create show how the Constitution is being diluted and taken away brick by brick.

He said that the ED slamming down on some of senior Congress leaders for “no rhyme or reason” shows  the political victimization they are indulging. It is a very dangerous trend which needs to be addressed, he stated.

NPCC vice president Capt GK Zhimomi also said that “the Constitution is under attack.” Federalism, he said, which has defined our democracy for the last seven decades, has been dismantled brick by brick.
