Calls for restraint amid church vandalism incident

Bhandari, December 17 (MExN): The Sub-Divisional Planning and Development Board (SDPDB), Bhandari on December 16 reviewed law and order issue at State Seed Farm (SSF) Merapani.

As per the State DIPR, during the meeting, the SSF Deputy Director Lawrence Zeliang apprised the house of a ‘commotion and subsequent scuffle’ that occurred on December 14 at the farm. 

He informed that the situation was brought under control with the intervention of the district administration and law enforcement personnel from both Nagaland and Assam.

The Deputy Director further reported that on December 15, parts of the State Seed Farm Baptist Church, established in 1882 within farm’s premises, were ‘vandalised.’ 

The church, he noted, has long been a peaceful place of worship.

In connection with the incidents, fist information reports (FIRs) has been lodged at the nearest police stations in Bhandari, Nagaland, and Merapani, Assam, he added. 

Urging the house to take serious cognisance of the vandalism of a place of worship, the Deputy Director appealed to all concerned not to take the law into their own hands.

While deliberating on issues related to the SSF, Merapani, the Additional Deputy Commissioner and Vice Chairman SDPDB, Bhandari Longasen Lotha advised the department to impose a total ban on hunting within the farm help maintain a peaceful environment.

He also lauded the Bhandari based officers and staffs for diligently serving the public over the course of the year.

The house also proposed and approved the creation of an ‘Officers Club, Bhandari’ to foster coordination among officers and enhance public service delivery, the report added.
