Security tightened along Assam-Nagaland border

DIMAPUR, JUNE 4 (MExN): Following the killing of an Adivasi worker on June 3 near the Naganijan area in Assam, security has been tightened along the Assam Nagaland border area. Various reports suggest that Assam government has deployed additional forces along the border, particularly in the Mariani area, to stop recurrence of similar incidents.

A press note by the Border Peace Co ordination Committee (Assam Nagaland) informed that as of 5:00 pm on June 4, no untoward incident has been reported with regard to June 3 incident.  Meanwhile, news agencies have reported that local groups, including the All Assam Tea Tribe Students Association have begun an indefinite economic blockade on Tuesday at three places along the Assam-Nagaland border in Jorhat, Sivsagar and Golaghat.

The BPCC (A-N) said that the AATTSA did not mention the period or nature of the blockade. It was however informed that the AATTSA would await the Assam Government’s response and decide on the issue and, that till such time, the blockade would continue.

The note stated that the blockade had no affect on Naga travelers to Mariani and Amguri, since the Ao senden had already imposed a blockade on the Tuli-Amguri and Mokokchung-Mariani roads since May 28.

However, PTI and IANS have reported that the blockade left many Nagaland-bound trucks stranded on the Assam side. It further reported the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi stating that the Nagaland government has assured to book the culprits involved in the killing and that they would be handed over to the Assam Police. A delegation of Assam’s opposition party, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), led by former minister, Atul Bora visited the Mariani area today and took stock of the situation.

The AGP, which protested outside the office of the Jorhat Deputy Commissioner today, submitted a memorandum to the Assam Governor, JB Patnaik demanding an inquiry into the incident and punishment for the culprits.
