Several institutions observe International Day of Yoga

Dimapur, June 21 (MExN): Several government offices, educational institutions, security forces, community organisations and public sector establishments in the state and beyond observed the International Day of Yoga 2026 on Saturday with yoga sessions and awareness programmes held under this year's theme, "Yoga for Healthy Ageing."

At the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Medziphema, staff members and labourers participated in yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation sessions organised in response to the Ministry of Ayush's nationwide call for participation. Director Dr R L Raut highlighted the importance of yoga in preventive healthcare and encouraged employees to make yoga a regular part of their lives for improved physical and mental well-being.

Balijan English School, in collaboration with Patanjali Yog Samiti, Dimapur unit, organised a one-day yoga camp under the motto, "Do yoga, stay healthy." Headmaster RS Pandey spoke on the benefits of yoga and urged students to practise it daily. Yoga instructor Sajal Roy demonstrated various yoga postures and explained their role in promoting physical fitness, mental development and overall well-being.

 

In Dimapur, the JITO Ladies Wing celebrated the occasion with nearly 100 participants, including members of the Jain community, BJP Minority Federation, Rotary Club and other social organisations.

The programme began with the chanting of the Namokar Mantra and featured yoga asanas and pranayama sessions conducted by instructor Rinku Jhanjhari Jain. The organisers said the event aimed to promote health awareness, community participation and social harmony while encouraging participants to adopt yoga as part of their daily routine.

 

The Office of the Joint Controller of Communication Accounts (Jt CCA) also marked the day at its office premises, where employees participated in yoga exercises and breathing techniques to promote physical and mental wellness while strengthening teamwork among staff.

The Department of Physical Education at St. Joseph University observed International Yoga Day on June 20 with students, faculty members and staff taking part in yoga sessions led by Dilip Bhagat, State President of Patanjali Yog Samiti and Bharat Swabhiman Trust, along with Sajal Roy, District President of the organisations. The programme included demonstrations of yoga asanas, breathing techniques and relaxation exercises, along with discussions on their health benefits.

 

The Brahma Kumaris Rajyoga Meditation Centre, Kohima, observed International Day of Yoga along with a Nasha Mukta Signature Campaign through programmes conducted at the NHIDCL office, Kohima Head Post Office and 13 Assam Rifles, benefiting around 600 to 700 participants. Director Rajyogini BK Rupa Behen said yoga is not merely physical exercise but a holistic way of life that strengthens both the body and mind. She stressed that challenges such as stress, drug addiction, rising suicide cases and moral decline could be addressed through yoga and meditation. She also explained that Rajyoga Meditation helps develop concentration, self-awareness and positive thinking, while yogic practices such as pranayama improve mental clarity, emotional stability and overall health. Participants expressed their commitment to incorporating yoga and meditation into their daily lives.

Assam Rifles also celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga at multiple locations across Nagaland with the participation of personnel of all ranks and their family members. Yoga sessions included various postures, breathing techniques and meditation exercises aimed at improving flexibility, concentration, endurance and stress management. According to the force, the initiative sought to encourage the adoption of yoga as a daily practice while promoting healthy ageing, physical and mental resilience, and overall well-being. Assam Rifles said it continues to organise activities linked to International Day of Yoga as part of its commitment to the welfare of its troops, their families and the communities it serves.

 

Meanwhile, the International Day of Yoga was observed across the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), including its headquarters, divisions, workshops and other railway establishments. At the NFR headquarters in Maligaon, General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, senior officials, employees and their family members participated in yoga sessions at the Railway Indoor Stadium. Similar programmes were organised across all five railway divisions and NFR (Construction), with thousands of employees and their families taking part. NFR also used social media platforms to promote awareness about the benefits of yoga and encourage its adoption for healthier living.
