The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) today conducted an inspection in an around forest area in Laimer Shillong after receiving complaints from residents about water bodies being contaminated by wastes coming out of toilets and cowshed constructed upstream Umrasai.

Talking to reporters, HITO Mylliem leader Fasterfield Ryntathiang said they have received complaints from people of Laimer Shiteng especially those who earn their livelihood by washing cloths about the contaminated Umrasai stream and today they have surveyed the area and found out that the main cause if coming from people living upstream of Umrasai especially the waste from cowsheds and toilets.

“Today, we saw that just upstream of Umrasai, there are cowsheds and people living in the area do not have septic tanks hence the liquid waste coming out from toilets and cowshed ultimately end up flowing to the Umrasai stream,” said Ryntathiang.

Ryntathiang said that HITO will formally lodge complaints to the forest department and deputy commissioner (DC) to seek intervention on the polluted stream as this stream is one of the sources of earning especially for the women of Laimer and its adjacent areas.

He added that earlier people of these areas make use of the Umrasai stream not just for washing clothes but also for consumption by picnic goers and also by residents during water crises but now the stream is not fit for human use.
