SJU celebrates National Science Day with focus on women in science

Chümoukedima, March 12 (MExN): St Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima, observed National Science Day with a programme highlighting the role of women in science and the growing influence of artificial intelligence in education.

The event, organised by the university’s Science Club in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council, was held at the SJU auditorium on March 11 under the theme “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat.”

The first session focused on women’s participation in science. Delivering the keynote address, Prem Prakash Mishra, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at National Institute of Technology Nagaland, spoke on the topic “Women in Science: Catalysing Viksit Bharat.”

Mishra encouraged women to recognise their abilities and potential, stressing that empowering women through education is essential for scientific advancement and social progress. He also highlighted challenges that women continue to face, including child marriage, gender discrimination and domestic violence.

He further referred to government initiatives such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and the National Education Policy 2020, which aim to promote women’s education and empowerment. According to him, greater participation of women in science is vital for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

The second session featured a workshop on “AI Tools for Education,” conducted by Arambam Neelima. She introduced participants to the expanding role of artificial intelligence in modern education and demonstrated how AI-based tools can support learning, teaching and research.

During the workshop, students were introduced to platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Wolfram Alpha for academic use. She also highlighted writing and research tools including Grammarly, QuillBot, Elicit, ChatPDF and Perplexity AI.

In addition, presentation tools such as Canva and Gamma were demonstrated to help students create visually engaging presentations. The interactive workshop provided students with practical exposure to AI technologies aimed at improving learning and academic productivity.

As part of the celebration, the Science Club also organised competitions including a debate and quiz, where students actively participated. The programme concluded with a prize distribution ceremony followed by a vote of thanks delivered by Junglio N., Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics.

The event ended on a positive note, inspiring participants to continue exploring science and innovation.
