The All Sumi Students' Union (SKK) has summated a proposal urging  the Director of the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Nagaland, to introduce of Sociology as an academic subject in Zunheboto Government College (ZGC).

In a representation submitted to the directorate, SKK President Hipito Achumi and General Secretary P Samuel Chophy highlighted that the absence of Sociology in the college has created a significant gap in academic opportunities for students of Zunheboto district and its surrounding areas.

“Students who wish to pursue Sociology are left with no option but to seek admission in institutions located in other districts and towns, imposing financial strain on families, particularly those from economically weaker backgrounds,” the representation stated.

The union pointed out that some students are compelled to abandon higher education aspirations altogether due to the non-availability of the subject locally.

The SKK also underlined that Sociology, as a discipline, plays a vital role in fostering understanding of society, social relationships, cultural values and developmental challenges, equipping students with critical thinking skills to address contemporary social issues.

The representation further noted that introduction of the subject would enhance college enrolment, reduce student migration, and promote inclusive access to higher education while strengthening the educational infrastructure of the district.

The union expressed hope that the directorate would treat the matter with due priority and take necessary steps at the earliest.

The SKK officials submitted a proposal to the Additional Director, Directorate of Higher Education, Dr K Nishena Nekha, for introduction of Sociology as a subject at Zunheboto Government College. Dr Nekha is also a former principal of the college.

During the interaction with college staff, SKK officials apprised the authorities of the institution's background, noting that ZGC was initially sponsored and managed by the Sumi Hoho and was established as a private college on July 21, 1980, before the state government took over the institution in November 1985.

The college, which operates under the motto “Struggle and Progress,” is affiliated to Nagaland University and holds NAAC 'B' Grade accreditation. It is also recognised under Sections 2(f) and 12(b) of the UGC Act, 1956.

The officials noted that the college currently has a total enrolment of 352 students, supported by 32 faculty members and 31 ministerial staff. The institution presently offers departments of English, Geography, History, Political Science, Economics, Education and Environmental Studies.

SKK officials pointed out that the absence of a Sociology department was a major impediment for students aspiring to pursue the subject, compelling them to seek admission in other institutions for their higher studies.
