‘Son of Nagaland’: Documentary on football legend Dr T Ao released

Kohima, September 24 (MExN): A documentary tracing the life, football career and legacy of Dr Talimeren Ao, titled “Son of Nagaland,” was released on September 24, with the state government announcing a yearly lecture series in his memory and plans to feature the legendary footballer in the Hornbill Magazine 2026.

The documentary, presented by the Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) and directed by Kilangtemsu Imsong, was formally released at CIMORB Hotel, Old Minister’s Hill, by Temjen Imna Along, Minister of Tourism and Higher Education, Nagaland. The event was held as part of the commemorative activities for the 25th Dr T Ao Inter-District Football Tournament, Silver Jubilee Edition 2026.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Imna Along stressed the importance of taking “Son of Nagaland” to wider platforms so that Dr Ao’s life and achievements reach a broader audience. He emphasised the need to preserve and share the story of the legendary footballer with younger generations and beyond the state.

The Minister announced that a Dr T Ao Lecture and discourse series will be launched by the Government of Nagaland’s Department of Higher Education at Fazl Ali College on January 28 next year, marking his birth anniversary, as a yearly event in collaboration with the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) and MDFA. The initiative aims to incorporate Dr Ao’s life and football career into educational and research discourse, enabling students to learn more about his exemplary life and illustrious sporting career. He also announced that, in commemoration of the Silver Jubilee Edition of the Dr T Ao Inter-District Football Championship, photographs and reports of Dr T Ao will be featured in the Hornbill Magazine 2026 in his memory. The Minister conveyed his best wishes to the organisers for the successful conduct of the tournament.

The programme brought together representatives of the NFA, members of Dr T Ao family, MDFA officials and organising committee to honour the legacy of one of Nagaland’s most celebrated sporting personalities. An official brooch was presented to Imna Along and the granddaughter of Dr T Ao.

In his address, Chenonlo Woch, Joint Secretary, NFA, spoke about the continuing influence of Dr Ao’s career and legacy on the younger generation. He recalled how Dr T Ao left football at the height of his career and returned to Nagaland, highlighting his commitment and love for his people. He also referred to the historical account of an offer from Arsenal Football Club, noting that Dr Ao’s decision to return to Nagaland reflected his desire to serve his people and contribute to society.

Representing the Dr Talimeren Ao family, Ningdangnaro Tally, his granddaughter, expressed gratitude to the Government of Nagaland, the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, the NFA and the organising committee for their efforts in bringing the documentary to fruition. She said the documentary would help keep the spirit and legacy of her grandfather alive for present and future generations.

The opening remarks and an introduction to the documentary were given by Temjenmenba, Advisor, Transport and Technical Education, and Convener of the Organising Committee for the 25th Edition of the Dr T Ao Football Tournament.

At the centre of the programme was the screening of “Son of Nagaland,” which chronicles Dr Talimeren Ao’s journey in football and places his achievements within the broader history of the sport in Nagaland and India. Through archival material, personal accounts and historical context, the documentary seeks to preserve an important chapter of the region’s sporting heritage for contemporary and future audiences.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Imsongmeren, Director, State Lotteries, and Secretary of the Organising Committee. He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders who contributed towards making the documentary a reality and acknowledged the support extended by the family of Dr T Ao throughout its making. He also thanked the Government of Nagaland, the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, the NFA, the organising committee and all those involved in preserving and presenting the story of Dr T Ao.

The documentary release comes ahead of the Silver Jubilee Edition of the Dr T Ao Inter-District Football Tournament, scheduled to be held from October 13 to 31, 2026, at Renpo Lu Sports Complex, Ungma, Mokokchung.

Dr Talimeren Ao holds a distinctive place in the history of Indian football. As captain of India’s football team at the 1948 London Olympics, he became part of a defining moment in the country’s early sporting history following Independence. His journey from Nagaland to the national and international football stage remains an important chapter in the sporting history of the state and the country.

“Son of Nagaland” seeks to carry that story forward not merely as a record of sporting achievement, but also as a reflection of the determination, discipline, service and pioneering spirit that marked Dr Talimeren Ao’s journey, the Media Team, Dr T Ao Trophy 2026 stated.
