‘Sovereignty’ is a word for which thousands of Nagas have given their lives willingly free. It is a word for which many a Naga have their lifeless bones scattered in far away places unknown, uncared and eternally crying: ‘when you reach our Village, tell them we lie here bare, alone and uncovered for theirs tomorrow’. Sovereignty is a word for which many have endured torture and Prison in the prime of their lives; it is a word for which many have just vanished without a trace from their dear ones.
The Sovereignty of a People germinates from the Will of the People. In the Nagas, it germinated from the will of the Naga People and therefore the Nagas hold it dear. Sovereignty is a Spirit and a Value from God; therefore it is God-given and not Man-created. It is a blessing God bestows on every Mankind. Sovereignty is therefore a Human Right.
Life is ‘breathe of God’ but it is housed in the Human corporal Body. Similarly, Sovereignty is a Gift of God residing in a corporate State. The Ability to protect the Sovereignty of a State, in the manner of man’s ability to protect his own life, is of great importance. If man cannot protect himself from wild Animals, and Diseases, he has to blame himself for his inability: if a State cannot protect its own Sovereignty, it has no one to blame than itself. In its simplest form, Sovereignty of a People or of a State is protected by joust of Arms or whatever ingenuity the People or the State may develop.
Some intelligent people often say Sovereignty has no meaning if one does not have ECONOMY. This is just like saying Life has no meaning if you are POOR or it is no worth a Wealthy Man if he has no Body Guards to protect his Life. One just can not compare precious human Principles and Diamonds in the same measuring Scale to measure their weights. Let no one say Sovereignty has no value if he has no Economy.
‘Nagas have every right to Sovereignty’ Mahatma Gandhi said, ‘but let us agree to live together’. Let Nagas be very honest to the reality of this Age of the Naga Life. Today the Nagas are nowhere near protecting their Sovereignty in the improbable and impracticable event of India deciding to crush the Naga Spirit of Sovereignty with its available nuclear Arsenal and Army. But in today’s sophisticated human Society, even a person as totally invalid as Stephen Hawkin has many means to protect his Life, a fragile Actress may have highly trained Detectives and armed Body Guards to protect her life. Mankind has developed various means to protect Human Lives and even a Beggar has no direct threat to his life in the Society.
Today many Nagas are reality-minded and factual but they are afraid to spell out the reality in them for fear of the ‘barrel of the Gun’ in his Society: on the other hand those Nagas who believe in Armed protection of their Sovereignty are also afraid of the Opinion of the Naga Public to spell out their Idea on the solution to the Naga Sovereignty.
If a Champion Wrestler can not protect his Title from his Challenger, what value is there in his claiming a Champion Wrestler? Indeed, Sovereignty in the final analysis is protected and preserved with joust of Arms; but a SOVEREIGNTY that is protected with CONCORD, FRIENDSHIP AND GOODWILL is more secure and more lasting.
Sovereignty is a very great thing but if one is imprisoned in it own rampart of Sovereignty from where it neither can come out nor can get in, then what value is that Sovereignty?
My Solution on the Sovereignty Tango between India and the Nagas is:
On India’s Cognizance Of The Naga Right To Sovereignty, The Nagas Decide To A Union With India On Constitutionally Interminable Mutual Terms Of Concord Between India And The Nagas.
Nagas will do well to ultimately come to this CONCORD, the sooner the better rather than later.
