
Kohima |August 10 : A one day Special State Consultative Meet of “The Integrated Child Protection Scheme Functionaries” in Nagaland organized by the State Child Protection Society was held today at Conclave Conference Hall, LCS Building, Kohima.
Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF, India, Anirudha Kulkarni in his brief introduction on Integrated Child Protection Scheme (IPS) said that the key element of ICPS was to bring the several child protection programmes under one umbrella and initiate new interventions.

ICPS also aims to contribute to the improvements in the well being of children in difficult circumstances, as well as to the reduction of vulnerabilities to situations and actions that lead to abuse, neglect, exploitation, abandonment and separation of children.
He maintained that many children are at risk of abandonment, exploitation, neglect and destitution because of poor socio-economic conditions of their families, Kulkarni asserted that importance of ensuring that children are placed with their own families instead of putting them into institutional care as a poverty coping measure.
“Children are best cared for in their own families and have a right to family care and parenting by both parents. Institutionalization should be used as a last resort measure after all the other options have been explored”, he added.
He also said that capacity training program to be given to all institution staff in all the districts and sensitize and train members of allied system including local bodies, police, judiciary and other concerned departments of the State Government to undertake responsibilities under ICPS.
Kulkarni expressed his contentment with the progress made on Integrated Child Protection Scheme in Nagaland since its inception The Integrated Child Protection Scheme is expected to significantly contribute to the realization of Government and the State responsibility for creating a system that will efficiently and effectively protect children.
Earlier, Chairman SCPS-N and Secretary of Social Welfare Norman Putsure delivered the key-note address. Discussions on ICPS activities at District Level and District Need Assessment and Development of District and State Child Protection Plans by resource persons were the other highlights of the Consultation Meet.
