
Dimapur, March 22 (DIPR): Addressing the members of the house at the ninth session of the eleventh Nagaland Legislative Assembly on March 22, 2011, the Governor said that it has been the endeavour of the Government to strengthen the state police forces as a long term measure, so as to reduce our dependence on central forces for law and order duties.
He informed that the state police has strength of more than 26,000 and is the biggest source of employment for our youth. He also said that new IR battalions has been raised, equipping them with modern weaponry and equipments and further said that the state police is in high demand for internal security duties in various parts of the country due to their excellent record. Nagaland has also successfully raised and trained six commando companies to make the state better prepared for dealing with terrorist threats, the Governor said.
On the recently raised 15 IR Mahila Battalion the Governor commented that they have won the hearts of the people all over the country with their efficient performance and smart turnout during the last Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. Construction of new permanent battalion headquarters, upgradation of the police hospital to first referral hospital and provision of sophisticated security equipments are some of the steps taken to modernize the police force the Governor informed.
The Governor also lauded the efforts of the Village Guards for providing safety and security in villages located along the porous Indo-Myanmar border, over the years. He informed that the Government of India has approved the proposal of the State Government to enhance the monthly honorarium of the Village Guards from `500/- to `1500/-. He also informed the house that the VG Organisation has been given a separate allocation of `4.00 crores for housing and offices under Special Plan Assistance during 2010-11.
Governor on the need for accurate census
The Governor also emphasised on the need for accurate census, stating it as an essential requirement for development planning and for equitable distribution of the resources for balanced growth. “The tendency to artificially inflate the population data will create a misleading picture of the state’s development status, and lead to misallocation of precious human and financial resources”, the Governor cautioned.
Towards this end, the Government has taken special measures to see that Census 2011 is done accurately, the Governor said. He also informed the house that the 1st and 2nd phases of 2011 census have been successfully conducted in all the districts, where for the very first time, the “Community Monitoring” system was introduced, in which members of the civil societies and NGOs participated in the conduct of census in all the districts. The Governor expressed optimism that Nagaland Census 2011 would be accurate and reliable and that it would satisfy everyone concerned.
