Kohima | July 21 : The second day of the agitation called by Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) against the cancellation of “Backdoor Appointment”, from Power department, paralyzed the work in the office of Chief Engineer, Power at Kohima as the agitators barred the employees from entering the office premises.
A democratic and patient agitation ruled over the second day with the support from tribal leaders, student volunteers along with the President and his colleagues. However the agitation did not seem too loud for the government to respond to the demand till late evening.
Briefing the student volunteers and media at the Chief Engineer’s office, President NSF Kelhouneizo Yhome expressed his gratitude to the students for their patience and support and called for more participation including from the Engineering students to join hands to fight against backdoor appointment.
The last meeting held yesterday, 20th July afternoon with the department officials and seniors members NSF, was not fruitful as the department officials requested to wait till the return of Power Minister Doshehe Sema who was supposed to reach today from Delhi, but failed to turn up thereby there is apprehension that the agitation may turn more serious if the current picketing is made to stretch for too long without any response over their demand.
The NSF has been on strike since yesterday, after the department’s failure to initiate positive steps in response to the Representation and Ultimatum of the NSF submitted on June 14 and July 14 to the State Power Department. The NSF demanded for strict adherence to 60 per cent vacancies to be recruited through open recruitment through Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC). It demanded that any direct recruitment or departmental promotion be exercised as per the prescribed norms.
Meanwhile, President NSF Kelhouneizo Yhome expressed his regret for staging strike against an establishment providing public service.
