
Kohima, September 3 (MExN): In what can be described as community policing, Kohima Village Youth Organization (KVYO) recovered three stolen bikes and apprehended two bike lifters. It was informed that another of the accused managed to escape under the cover of darkness today morning at Medziphema.
The accused were intercepted and apprehended at around 3 am today while they were riding the stolen bike and proceeding towards Dimapur. Both the apprehended accused have been put under the custody of KVYO till the filing of this report. The recovered bike includes two Pulsar and a Bajaj Discovery which were stolen from Kohima village, D-Block and Officers Hill around midnight and wee hour today.
Narrating the story, KVYO Vice President Peter Rutsa informed that he was returning home at around 12.30 am when he came across two black bikes being suspiciously driven down from Kohima towards the town. On reaching home, he called up the owners of black colour bikes in the village and confirmed that one bike was missing.
The KVYO then organized volunteers under the leadership of its Vice President Peter Rutsa. Three groups were formed after which they sought the help of friends and well wishers including some police officials and started a chase in three direction including roads leading towards Dimapur, Wokha and Manipur.
Meanwhile, through enquiry from truck drivers proceeding toward Kohima, the KVYO volunteers confirmed that three motor bikes were proceeding towards Dimapur. Some well wishers and some police officials from Dimapur were contacted for assistance. A road blockade at Medziphema intercepted the motorists and apprehended the two while the other escaped.
The KVYO said that it is keeping the two apprehended motor bike lifter in its custody with the demand from the community of the accused absconder who is named as the main mastermind be produced before the KVYO for the release of the two apprehended accused.
The KVYO has thanked the duty officer of North Police Station SI. K.L Angami and his two constables, ASI Mhathung Kikon and ASI M.C.Rutsa both from the East Police Station Dimapur, KVYO volunteers led by Vice President Peter Rutsa, KVYO volunteers from Dimapur, Kezhale-o Riilho and friends from Dimapur for their voluntary help and resulting in recovering the three stolen bikes and apprehending the two accused.
On the other hand, the KVYO also requested the concerned authority to review the decision to withdraw all the inter-district police check gates in view of the increasing cases of vehicle theft. However, the youth organization expressed its complete opposition against the exorbitant collection by the police personnel manning the check gates.
