Students debate on impact of social networking sites

Kohima | October 1 : Raising strong vice against the insecurity of social networking, Totikali Yepthomi of Pranabananda Women’s College Dimapur swiftly occupied the champion of  6th Inter college debate competition held on the topic: “Social Networking Sites are Benefiting the Youths”, organized by Sazolie College Jotsoma (SCJ) at its college today, October 1.
Rükuotunuo Ruth of Kohima College Kohima and Anato G Swu of Patkai Christian College were declared as second and third position respectively.
Altogether 20 colleges from across the state took part in the competition
Resenting over social networking sites, the debaters from the opposition bench said there is in no way the sites are helping the youths rather virtually effects the mentality of the youngsters, as the sites are filled with filthy pictures, dramas and videos having negative impacts in the life of the youngsters.
Even identities are hidden or used different names in social networking, crime rates increases through social networking and creates havoc in the society, pointed out by the opposition debaters.
Subtracting the points and views of the treasury bench who said social networking is educational and helpful doing researches, the opposition bench hit back stating that even usage of English grammar has become despicable that even text messages are used in short writings and doing research with the help of social networking sites, is not gainful like the way taking research of ‘our’ own adding that news and information in newspapers and other books are more informative and reliable as the stories are well proof-read, edited and published under registered organization, however, seeking identity, exploring relationship through site are so unethical as it invites more confusion, corruption, cheating on parents and does not expand knowledge.
The motion bench also presented their opinions on benefiting sites stating that it helps to develop ones personality where even a person can give up bad habits engaging more time on social networking sites adding that Nagas are too conservative thereby should open up more and should not let the sites “corrupts us”.  
Taking advantage of the topic, the motion bench also said a group  “The Naga Blog” of a social networking site is taking initiative to support the Sikkim earthquake victims. Adding that social networking sites are the best gift of globalization as it helps in developing ones’ personality directly or indirectly and gives the opportunity to think globally updating from one corner to everywhere.
The critics of the competition, Dr. Kedilezo Kikhi, Assistant professor, Department of Sociology, Nagaland University, in his critic comment said usage of social networking sites depends on how a person use and said there are alien cultures coming in the society when it comes to suicide cases.
Kikhi said it is impossible to compete with computer technology and that social networking has become a social means in this century.
Earlier, principal SCJ, Dr. Niu W. Kuotsu, in his welcome address said the platform is organized to give the students more opportunity to explore their talents to meet different challenges and to polish themselves which is like a basic research as lest prepared may become ignorant to various issues.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Kangzangding Thou, while Bendangzenla Longkumer proposed vote of thanks.
Ngukato K Achumi occupied the seat of the moderator.
Vikhweno Chale, under secretary, forest department, Joshua Sheqi, Advocate Guwahati High Court, Kohima Bench and Keleseho Stephen Tsükrü, Assistant Sub inspector, Fire & Emergency services, Kohima were among the panel of judges for the competition.
The programme was sponsored by Department of Higher education, Government of Nagaland.
The winners were awarded with cash and certificates while the participants were also given citations.
Kuku Lunglang of Sazolie College, Tiamongla Kichu, Baptist Colege, Nukuzo Phesao of Shalom Bible Seminary Zubza, Wilson Odyuo, Unity College Dimapur and Venguse-ü-Yashu Mt Olive College were listed in the consolation category.
