Students suspend agitation after govt withholds special recruitment drive

Dimapur, October 7 (MExN): Four students’ organizations, the Angami Students’ Union, Ao Student’s Conference, Kyong Students’ Union and the All Sumi Students’ Union have suspended their agitations against the Nagaland government’s “special recruitment drive” to appoint 10 Extra Additional Commissioners (EACs) from the “backward tribes.” The union said today that the organizations suspending their stir are for the state government’s deciding to ‘withhold’ the recruitment drive.
A joint statement from the union stated – “In view of the state government’s decision to withhold the recruitment process of 10 EAC posts for less represented tribes, we hereby temporarily suspend our ongoing agitation. However, since the government has not withdrawn the 10 posts as demanded by us but only ‘withhold,’ we make it clear that the agitation will resume if the government goes back to start the recruitment process for the 10 EACs.”
The unions also clarified that they are only fighting against the government’s ‘divisive policy of segregating tribes’ while doubly benefitting others. The government’s policy of specially reserving 10 EACs was about to lead to serious misunderstandings among the Naga family members, the organization said.
“Therefore, we would like to appeal to those tribes who were listed under the special recruitment drive not to misunderstand our steps. We are not against any tribe but only against government’s unsound decision. We will not remain mute to any future decision of the government which could lead to division among the Naga family,” the organizations added.
