Thunderstorms forecasted from May 12-15: NSDMA

Kohima, MAY 11 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a weather advisory for the period from May 12 to 15, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts across the state.

A press release from the NSDMA informed that on May 12, light rain and isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely to occur in parts of Kohima, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng and Mon districts, while most other districts are expected to remain under no major weather warning.

For May 13, the NSDMA stated that localized thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rainfall are expected over several districts including Kohima, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Peren, Wokha, Mokokchung, Mon, Longleng and Tseminyu.

The advisory stated that on May 14, thunderstorms with lightning and light to moderate rainfall are likely to continue in many districts. Longleng district may experience moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places.

On May 15, scattered intermittent light to moderate rainfall is expected in several districts including Kohima, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Mokokchung, Mon and Tseminyu. The NSDMA further cautioned that Mon district is likely to experience moderate to heavy intermittent rainfall during the day.

In view of the forecast, the NSDMA advised the public to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning activity.

“People are advised to avoid sheltering under trees and near electric poles during bad weather conditions,” the advisory stated.

Residents living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have also been asked to remain alert for possible waterlogging, flash floods and landslides during the period.

The NSDMA further requested all District Disaster Management Authorities and concerned departments to remain on alert and take necessary precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

The authority also encouraged citizens to download and use the Safer Nagaland App for accurate real-time alerts and verified weather updates.
