Imphal, September 6 (NNN): The Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Commitee (SHDDC) has announced to lift its 'general strike' in Sadar Hills area after 35 days of its imposition. The bandh will be lifted from the midnight of September 6. However, the economic blockade will continue.
Announcing its decision today, the SHDDC said considering the immense suffering of the public they have decided to lift the bandh. The decision of the SHDDC followed a day after the United Naga Council (UNC) had lifted its total bandh. With these developments, there will be free flow of passenger buses, taxis and private vehicles except those goods vehicles. The SHDDC had imposed the indefinite economic blockade since August 1. The blockade was had turned into total indefinite bandh from August 2 following the death of three persons in an blockade related incident.
On August 21, the Nagas under the banner of United Naga Council imposed counter bandh in "Naga areas" against any move to bifurcate "Naga areas" for the creation of new districts.
Meanwhile, some nine goods laden trucks were burnt down at Kangpokpi Bridge in Sadar Hills by SHDDC volunteers this evening. According to the SHDDC spokesman, over 20 trucks came from Dimapur side along with a convoy of 43 Assam Rifles. The volunteers of SHDDC after having had learnt about the development, intercepted the convoy at the bridge at around 6 pm and set the goods trucks on fire, according to the SHDDC spokesman adding that nine of them were burnt down.
Accusing the 43 Assam Rifles, the SHDDC spokesman said the Assam Rifles collected money from certain transporters in exchange for the provision of escort. "These activities of the Assam Rifles have been going on for sometime during the SHDDC agitation," said the SHDDC spokesman adding," Is it that the government is not in the position to give salaries to the jawans that they are taking bribe from the transporters in exchange for the escort?" asks the SHDDC spokesman.
