Dimapur, March 12 (MExN): Tenyimia Post Graduate Students' Union (TPGSU) of Nagaland University today expressed concern at the neglect, anomalies and apparent bias in the ‘Tenyidie’ department of the university. ‘Tenyidie’ is a dialect used by some tribes in Nagaland. The union submitted an article appended by its president Vesekho Khesoh elaborating the state the subject is reduced to, in Nagaland University.
'Tenyidie', is a dialect in Nagaland taught up to the post-graduate level. It has a composite syllabus of two year M.A. course having 50% course on Tenyidie language, literature, folklore studies, culture studies of Nagas; 25% on English literature and 25% on Linguistics.
The university is told to “review the grievances” seriously. The union has demanded that the results for an interview for Tenyidie teachers be declared instead of advertising and re-advertising the post. “The students’ career cannot be played upon and the patience is at the saturation point. Further, if the authority failed to meet the demands put forth by the students of the department of Tenyidie on 2nd March, 2011 the students will be compelled to pursue any kind of action and will not be held responsible if any untoward incidents occurred.”
“Since 2003, five sanctioned posts of faculty professor - 1, reader - 2 and lecturer - 2 remain vacant. In 2004, the above posts were advertised, where applicants applied for the posts. In the process of screening by the screening committee headed by the then Dean of Humanities and Education, all the applicants for the post of Tenyidie literature were screened out on the condition of not having NET,” the union explained.
The UGC does not offer NET examination facility to Tenyidie as it is a Non-Scheduled “language”. So there is relaxation of NET. “However, the Nagaland University authority deprived such facility to those who has requisite academic qualification for the literature. All the vacant posts were then re-advertised in 2005, 2006 and again in 2007 (against the 'Provision of Ordinance’) leading the department to run in a very pitiable condition,” the TPGSU stated.
The union disclosed that in 2007 an interview for the posts of Linguistics and Tenyidie literature was held one Mimi YA Kevichüsa and a T Temsünunsang, both from the stream of Linguistics lecturer were selected by the Selection Committee (not in Literature). Kevichüsa was selected to the post of Linguistics lecturer in the department as first in the merit list. Temsünunsang was selected to fill up the post of Tenyidie literature ‘who has no knowledge of Tenyidie language.’
“ Due to such unexpected result, the department of Tenyidie, some organizations within Tenyimia community and NUTA raised objections. Taking the opportunity, the authority had nullified both the declared interview result alter. The authority then, again re advertised the posts in 2007, without conduction interview for the posts of Reader and Professor till October 2009.”
The subsequent interview to that effect was again conducted on 10th October 2009, but the result is still undeclared, the students said.
Again, the TPGSU stated, one Dr. D. Kuolie, was the only regular lecturer in the department of Tenyidie and the only candidate who applied for the post of Reader faced the Selection Committee under Career Advance Scheme (CAS) for Promotion and Professor under direct recruitment on 10th October 2009. “His promotion under CAS has fallen due in 2006 as he has completed six years in the Senior Grade since 2004. For further information; he is a triple MA (English, Linguistics and Tenyidie); Ph. D; a recipient of Bhasha Samman Award, 2005; a recipient of Governor's award, 2008; 14 published books under his credit; 12 volumes of literary journal of Tenyidie; more than 40 seminar papers presented at State, Regional, National and International levels. But till date, the seeking of promotion was disregarded and kept pending.”
The union said the department as well as the student community had been submitting representation for the declaration of the result of interview but the same is ignored by the university authority again and again.
“The Department of Tenyidie had been facing shortage of faculty all these long years. Even the remuneration dues to be paid to temporarily arranged teachers especially from the Department of English, Nagaland University are kept unattended.”
Further, the union said, Dr. Mimi Kevichüsa, a brilliant linguist and product of Delhi University who served the Department of Tenyidie for more than 11 years under contract with no job security, has now been selected as a Professor in Hyderabad University.
“Her departure now has led the department of Tenyidie to a paralyze state with the department now running with only two lecturers (one regular and the other, a contract).”
