Two-day workshop on land management practices in Jhum cultivation underway

DIMAPUR | APRIL 6 : A two-day North East Regional workshop on “Sustainable Land and Ecosystem Management in Shifting cultivation areas of Nagaland for Ecological and Livelihood Security”, organized and sponsored by GEF-UNDP in collaboration with the state Department of Soil & Water Conservation, commenced here at Hotel Saramati on Thursday.
State Agriculture Production Commissioner, HK Khulu, who was the chief guest of the inaugural session in his address, briefed the gathering on the policies of the state government towards food security and land sustainability in Nagaland.
Khulu also thanked GEF-UNDP for taking up different activities in shifting cultivation areas of Nagaland and encouraged the team to continue with such livelihood promotion activities. Programme analyst, UNDP New Delhi, Ms. Lianchawii, delivered the key note address. Assistant country director, UNDP New Delhi, Srinivasan Iyer, the guest of honour also addressed the participants of the workshop.
In the technical sessions, Prof. PS  Ramakrishnan, INSA honorary scientist of School for Environmental Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Dr. KS Murali, programme officer (Climate Change) of World Food Programme, New Delhi, dwelled on the topic “Environmental Protection and Economic development in Shifting Cultivation area,” while Thiru Gnanavel, a Horticulture scientist of ICAR, Dimapur, spoke on “Livelihood promotion through integrated farming system.”
The technical session included open discussions, interactions and feedbacks. Officials from the Agri & Allied departments, village representatives and the Project Management unit attended the workshop.
The objective of workshop is sharing experiences on management of shifting cultivation (Jhum) areas in India to evolve a strategy that addresses land degradation for sustainable ecosystem and livelihood security in Nagaland.
According to the officials, the expected outcomes of workshop include: Participants are better informed about land management practices in Jhum (Shifting cultivation) areas; strategies adopted for effective coordination among departments and other relevant stakeholders that work on addressing land issues in Jhum (Shifting cultivation) areas in Nagaland.
The workshop is also expected to come out with a road map for successful management and implementation of the GoN-UNDP-GEF Project in the 70 villages spread over the three districts of Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha.
