IMPHAL | October 19

United Committee, Manipur (UCM) on Saturday demanded a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly at the earliest.

Addressing a hurriedly convened press conference at its office in Imphal, UCM president Sunil Karam said that the Centre had assured consulting all stakeholders before bringing a final solution to the peace negotiation with the NSCN(IM).

"However, without any consultation, the Centre is planning to ink an agreement to conclude the decades-long peace talks before October 31", he alleged. "The Centre’s decision to conclude the peace talks without prior consultation with all the stakeholders must be taken seriously," he added..

He then demanded that the state government must give a clarification on whether it is aware of inclusion of Manipur in granting autonomy or territorial council and extending Article 371(A) of Indian Constitution related with Nagaland in Msanipur as reported in some section of media.

The UCM president demanded that an Assembly session must be convened to strongly oppose the reported proposals of the Centre.

For the UCM, a public meeting will be convened on October 21 in Imphal to deliberate on the matter and takes a decision of the people of the state, he announced.

All preparation has been made for launching agitations against the creation of territorial council in the state and extension of Article 371(A) in the state if the reports were true, he added.

The UCM president then urged all communities living in the state to declare their stand on the Centre’s proposal as there has come the time to take a firm stand for the protection of territorial integrity of Manipur.

Reiterating UCM’s recent demand from all the 60 MLAs of the state to declare stand on the issue, Karam alleged that none of the MLAs so far gives positive response to the demand.
