Ukhrul | September 14 : A protest rally was conducted today at Ukhrul town to express resentment over the rape and murder of 16-year-old Vashmi Khaleng and four-year old Thupri Payal.
The protestors mostly the girl students were seen holding placards, which read, "Book the culprits and punish according to the law of the land”, “I want to live too”, “Stop killing girl students” etc. Some were also seen carrying the photograph of the victim.
There was a public meeting after the tally at Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) ground led by the Tangkhul Frontal organizations. The gathering at the meeting strongly condemned the barbaric act and heinous crime against women. The leaders on behalf of the community urged and strongly appealed men to stop the beastly act.
The inhumane act showing no respect to the value and dignity or security towards the women should immediately be rooted-out from our Society, the spokespersons in the function said.
The meeting resolved to take a joint declaration and decided to form committee comprising of representatives from the Tangkhul Frontal Organizations and family members of the victims. The committee shall seek and ensure justice for the victims. The TSL shall take overall in-charge for smooth discharging and functioning of the committee for the end of justice. A joint memorandum was also submitted to the Governor of Manipur State through Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner.
