DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 1 (MExN): The United Naga Council, the umbrella organization of the Nagas in Manipur has stated that Nagas wished for peace and harmony with the neighboring communities that are based on mutual respect for each other’s right over land and its traditional ownership. “We respect the genuine aspirations and rights of all communities just as we wish that our aspirations and rights are also respected by the others”, stated a press note issued by the Publicity Wing of the UNC.
Pointing out that the Nagas had their own traditional boundaries, the UNC stated that notwithstanding this the Government of Manipur (GoM), fully aware of this fact have made deliberate attempt to bifurcate and carve out Naga areas by constituting a Committee for Reorganization of Administrative and Police District boundaries to fulfill its design of creating new district without consulting the Nagas. “This has created a situation where our strong protests have to be constantly registered and brought into the public domain. When subtle attempts are being made to take away our land we will oppose it with whatever means”.
Stating that Nagas are one and will stand together as a people, the UNC pointed out that the economic blockade along NHs is the collective decision of the Naga people. “We are not against any individuals, groups or community but against the GoM and their nefarious divide and rule policy of pitting one community against the other. As much as we would like to avoid any communal confrontation, the victimization of any Naga individual, tribe or organization, be it through mental harassment or physical injury, on account of the ongoing agitation for our constitutional rights will be treated as a direct attack on the Naga people as a whole”, the UNC stated.
The UNC stated that it was much concerned with the communal attitude being displayed by the dominant community on the Nagas at Kakching Lamkhai, Moidangpok and Heirok areas and desired that its agitation be received in the right perspective.
