The United Naga Council (UNC) has issued a stricture asking all members of the Naga community to refrain from participating in the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples programme scheduled to be held on August 9, 2025, at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound, Imphal, under the banner of the Indigenous People's Forum, Manipur.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UNC described the forum as an “unmandated organisation” and asserted that the proposed event raises concerns over the question of “common indigeneity”.

The council stated, "Upon receiving information pertaining to the hosting of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples by an unmandated organisation... the undersigned hereby imposes a stricture on all members of the Naga community to refrain from participating in the scheduled programme.”

Reiterating its earlier directives, the UNC said it has repeatedly advised all Naga tribe hohos not to attend meetings, conventions, or events hosted by organisations lacking proper mandate, terming such participation a “willful confrontation to the aspiration of the Nagas.”

While expressing solidarity with indigenous communities globally, the UNC urged all members of the Naga community, “young and old,” to prioritize the protection of the community’s rights and interests by abstaining from the event.

It further warned that any individual or tribe participating in the programme “should not take the name of one’s tribe or speak on behalf of the Nagas.”
