UNC to intensify agitation over FMR abrogation, border fencing

United Naga Council (UNC) today resolved to announce a “mode of agitation” within 15 days against the Centre's decision to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and construct border fencing in what it claims as “Naga ancestral homeland.”

An emergency presidential council meeting of the UNC, attended by presidents of all Naga tribe hohos under the council, was held to discuss the issue in Senapati.

The council announced plans to intensify its movement against the Centre’s decision to construct border fencing and scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR), declaring that its 20-day ultimatum to the governments of India and Manipur had expired without resolution. UNC stated it was “left with no choice” but to escalate protests against what it termed the “unilateral abrogation” of the FMR and fencing in “Naga homeland.”

It lamented the government's failure to address longstanding grievances over border fencing and the FMR, despite what it called “consistent democratic protests” by Naga peoples. In a statement following its emergency meeting, the UNC noted that Naga peoples had previously registered their opposition through ‘a series of agitations, demonstrations, public rallies and numerous memoranda and press statements submitted to all government authorities with civility.’

Therefore, the UNC urged all its constituent units, subordinate units and associate units of the United Naga Council (UNC), All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), and the Naga community at large to mobilize their resources, rally the community, and gear up for the challenges ahead.

“We shall remain steadfast and committed to the protection of Naga rights, culture, and traditional ties and stand firm in our demands and fight for the future of our people,” UNC added.
