Tseminyu, April 12 (MExN): A forest fire occurred at Tsenhi, Tseminyu District, between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. on April 10. The fire started during clearing of a seedling site for terrace cultivation by Samuel Kent and his family, stated a press release issued by Tseminyu Union.

Following the fire incident, the Union highlighted that as a newly created district, Tseminyu faces challenges during emergencies like forest fires. Although a fire emergency service office is under construction and approved by the Government of Nagaland, it has not been inaugurated yet, it reported.

Therefore, it requested the concerned authorities to take immediate action to address this issue. A functional Fire Station at Tseminyu District is essential for safeguarding human lives, properties, flora, and fauna, the union added. It further requested the Government of Nagaland to prioritize this matter for the safety of Tseminyu district.

The union also highlighted that Tsenhi is a major terrace cultivation area where farmers typically prepare their seedling sites in April. While traditional jhum cultivation involved burning large areas, most farmers in the district have now adopted terrace farming methods. “As Nagas, our forefathers' traditional method of livelihood was jhum cultivation, which involved burning entire areas. However, we have shifted to terrace cultivation which is more environmentally friendly,” it added.

Tseminyu Union expressed gratitude to the Administration Office (DC Office), Superintendent of Police (SP Office), Radio Police Office, and Police Thana of Tseminyu district for their efforts in controlling the forest fire, and timely intervention of the Fire Station Chiebhoubouzou.
