Kohima, July 27 (MExN): The Western Angami Public Organisation (WAPO) on July 27 urged the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) and the Nagaland Public Works Department (NPWD) to immediately repair road stretches damaged by potholes, subsidence and landslides along National Highway-29.
In an open appeal, the organisation expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of road stretches at Kezanu (old KMC dumping site), Liezocha, the Bypass Petrol Pump area and the landslide-hit stretch at Melierü near Dzüdza village.
WAPO said incessant rainfall over the past few months has caused repeated incidents of road subsidence and landslides, resulting in extensive damage to the highway, which serves as a key connectivity corridor between Dimapur, Kohima and other parts of the state.
It said large potholes, cracks and uneven road surfaces have developed, posing serious risks to motorists and commuters. With the monsoon expected to continue beyond October, the condition of the affected stretches could worsen further and, in some places, become impassable, it added.
The organisation appealed to the authorities to undertake immediate repair and restoration of the damaged stretches, strengthen the road infrastructure to prevent further subsidence and landslides, and ensure regular long-term maintenance to provide safe and uninterrupted passage for commuters.
WAPO said it hoped the authorities would respond promptly to safeguard public safety and maintain connectivity. However, it cautioned that if remedial measures were not taken, the organisation may be compelled to initiate appropriate action in the interest of public safety and welfare.
