AIZAWL | September 3

Mizoram apex student body, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), on Tuesday said that it will construct a resting shed if Assam continues constructing the mosque at Zophai near Bairabi town along the Mizoram-Assam border.

MZP president, L Ramdinliana Renthlei said that the executive meeting of the student body on Tuesday resolved to make yet another attempt to construct a resting shed at the border area if measures are not taken to stop the ongoing mosque construction by Assam.

The meeting then expressed disappointment over the construction of the mosque at Zophai at a time the student body could not construct a resting shed there, he said. He also said that the MZP, once again, appealed to the state government to take measures to ensure that the ongoing construction of the mosque by Assam is halted.

Renthlei then said that the student body avoided any measure to stop the construction of the mosque as the meeting of 'core committee' on the border issue is scheduled to be held on September 6.

The MZP also appealed to the 'core committee' to take speedy action so that the mosque construction is stopped at the earliest, he said.

Tension erupted at Zophai in March last year when MZP functionaries attempted to re-construct a resting, which was allegedy destroyed by Assam police. More than 60 people, including journalists, were allegedly injured when the Assam police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protesting students, according to Renthlei. The border tension was defused when the Centre intervened.

It can be noted that, at a secretary level talks of Assam and Mizoram held in New Delhi in March last year, the Centre had directed both the state governments to maintain status quo on the disputed land.
