WNYF flags ‘resurgence’ of lawlessness in Dimapur

Appeals to Nagaland Police, CMSB for immediate preventive measures

Dimapur, December 22 (MExN): Expressing concern over what it described as a resurgence of lawlessness in Dimapur, the Western Naga Youth Front (WNYF) has appealed to the Director General of Police (DGP), Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dimapur, and the Chairman of the Ceasefire Monitoring Supervisory Board (CMSB) to take immediate preventive measures to restore public safety.

In a statement, the youth body said that citizens were increasingly alarmed not only by the occurrence of crimes but by their “brazen execution in broad daylight” by individuals claiming affiliation with Naga national groups. Such acts, it stated, were creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among residents.

The WNYF pointed to reports of intimidation, abduction, and extortion, alleging that armed individuals were moving freely in the city despite the presence of law enforcement agencies. Questioning how such activities could continue unchecked, the Front said this had eroded public confidence in the ability of authorities to ensure safety.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by the police and administration, including limited resources and workforce constraints, the WNYF maintained that these difficulties could not justify inaction or acceptance of the status quo.

Calling for a shift from reactive to proactive policing, the organisation said the current approach of taking action only after complaints are filed by authorities leaves communities vulnerable and victims traumatised.

By the time cases are registered and investigated, it noted, the damage is often already done.

Accordingly, the WNYF urged the DGP, CP Dimapur, and CMSB to implement comprehensive preventive measures immediately, including intensifying security checks for arms and ammunition, not just in public spaces but also in private spaces where credible intelligence suggests the presence of weapons.

It clarified that such measures should not target innocent citizens but aim to prevent armed intimidation.

Referring to the ceasefire ground rules agreed upon with the Government of India, the WNYF stressed that signatories must be held strictly accountable. It stated that while the CMSB has a designated role in monitoring compliance, it is ultimately the responsibility of State law enforcement agencies to ensure that violations are addressed decisively.

“The ceasefire cannot become a shield behind which criminal activities flourish unchecked, nor can monitoring be merely a paper exercise while enforcement remains absent,” the WNYF said in the statement, adding that monitoring must be rigorous and transparent, with clear consequences for breaches.

The organisation further called for coordinated intelligence gathering, regular security audits, visible patrolling in vulnerable areas, and swift action against law violators, irrespective of organisational affiliations.

Stating that citizens were only seeking the basic democratic right to live without fear, the WNYF appealed to the police leadership and administration to demonstrate decisive and timely action to restore the rule of law in the city.

“Half-measures and delayed responses only embolden those who see the law as an obstacle to be circumvented rather than a framework to be respected,” it added.
