The International Day of Older Persons was observed at Tiyi Hall, Wokha, on October 1, with a focus on building a society that recognises, respects and supports the needs of senior citizens.
Observed under the theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” the programme highlighted the importance of dignity, inclusion and social support for older persons, while also recognising their contributions to families and communities.
Special guest and Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, K Mhathung Tsanglao, reminded the gathering that ageing is a natural part of life and that everyone will eventually grow old. He stressed the need to treat senior citizens with dignity, care and consideration, while encouraging people to value the wisdom and experience they carry. He also urged the gathering to pray for the longevity and good health of senior citizens.
Speaking as the theme speaker, Acting Principal of Bailey Baptist College, Wokha, Penthungo Lotha, said old age should be viewed with dignity and celebrated as an important stage of life. He called for greater recognition of senior citizens and stressed the need for healthcare services that are more accessible and responsive to their needs.
Lotha further called for improved facilities and stronger support systems for older persons, describing them as an important link between generations whose contributions have helped shape society.
Advisor to the Chief Minister, Dr Chumben Murry, also underscored the importance of respect, inclusion and gratitude towards senior citizens. Speaking on behalf of the Senior Well-being and Recreational Club, he said the club was established to provide recreational activities for older persons and expressed hope that more opportunities for social interaction and recreation would be created for them.
