Mount Sinai School emerged as the top performer with three gold medals at the ‘Catch Them Young’ badminton tournament held in Wokha on March 28, which saw participation of 158 young players from 13 schools.
Organised by the Wokha District Badminton Association (WDBA), the one-day tournament aimed at identifying and grooming emerging talent at the grassroots level. It featured boys’ and girls’ events in the under-11, under-13 and under-15 categories, with competitions in both singles and doubles formats at the Indoor Badminton Stadium.
According to the WDBA, over 20 young players are currently undergoing training under the Khelo India programme with guidance from a professional coach, reflecting efforts to strengthen badminton at the district level.
In the under-11 girls’ singles, Grace L. Ngullie of Brighter High School clinched the title, while Ayesha Begum of Little Angels’ School was runner-up. In the boys’ category, Rikhyo T. Ezung of Gilgal High School emerged champion, with Meribemo Ngullie of LMHSS, Wokha finishing second.
The under-13 girls’ singles title went to Lichibeni T. Humtsoe of Mount Sinai School, with Chumlano T. Humtsoe as runner-up. In the boys’ singles, Lansothung Humtsoe of Khelo India secured first place, while Samuel Y. Angh of Perennial School placed second.
In the under-15 girls’ singles, Chumdeno Humtsoe of DBHSS Wokha won the title, while Abigail Ezung of Gilgal High School finished runner-up. Elishan Ngullie of Khelo India claimed the boys’ singles title, with Milonshan Humtsoe of Mount Sinai School finishing second.
In doubles events, Mount Sinai School’s Lichibeni T. Humtsoe and Chumlano T. Humtsoe won the under-13 girls’ title, while Eyingrhoni Ezung and Jandeno Ezung of DBHSS Wokha were runners-up. In the boys’ doubles, Liron Kikon and Tonovi H. Shohe of Isaiah Ability School emerged champions, with Sadik Ahmed and Mahmudul Hassan of Little Angels’ School finishing second.
In the under-15 girls’ doubles, Chumdeno Humtsoe and Lumvoni Chezia Kikon of DBHSS Wokha secured the title, while Sarokhaibam Lanchenbi Chani and Nibidita Chakrabarty of Little Angels’ School were runners-up. In the boys’ doubles, Milochan and Chumthungo of Mount Sinai School emerged champions, with Erenthung Yanthan and Rhonbemo Y. Ezung of St. Peter’s School, Longsa finishing second.
Certificates, cash prizes and medals were awarded to the winners during the closing programme.
