Mount Tiyi College, Wokha, concluded its two-day Autumn Fiesta 2026 on October 30 with literary, cultural and creative activities under the theme ‘Roots, Rhythm & Revelry.’ K Mhathung Tsanglao, Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, graced the second day as Guest of Honour. Addressing the gathering, Tsanglao commended students for their participation in competitions, noting it was encouraging to see young people express their thoughts with confidence, knowledge and conviction.

Reflecting on the theme ‘Words, Wit & Wisdom,’ he highlighted the power of words, capable of inspiring courage, healing differences and bringing people together, but also of creating misunderstandings when used carelessly. He urged students to be mindful of their words and the responsibility that comes with communication.

Emphasising listening, he said “hearing and listening are two different things,” explaining that effective communication requires understanding others, not merely preparing counterarguments. He noted that debate competitions help students examine issues from multiple perspectives and articulate their views, encouraging them to speak with conviction while remaining gentle in manner, adding that a strong speaker gives others room to think and express themselves.

On artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT, he advised discretion and independent verification rather than reliance on limited sources. He also highlighted humour’s role in easing tension and encouraging interaction, while stressing the importance of knowing when seriousness is required.

Distinguishing knowledge from wisdom, he observed that wisdom lies in applying knowledge appropriately, distinguishing what is popular from what is right, and what is easy from what is just. He reminded students that education should prepare them for life, noting that activities like debate and extempore build confidence, independent thinking and communication skills valuable in future roles as professionals, entrepreneurs, teachers, administrators and leaders.

The morning session commenced with a cultural salute, followed by debate and extempore competition. Vice-Principal Dr Khyopenthung Tsope delivered the welcome address, C Thungyamo Humtsoe, General Secretary of MTCSU, presented the voice of the students, and Abemo Kikon, President of the Alumni Association delivered the vote of thanks.

The afternoon session, “Dressed in Dreams, Soaring in the Sky,” featured a cosplay-cum-kite-flying competition. The concluding session, “Rhythms & Beats,” featured an evening of music, energy and celebration with folk songs, folk dance and a traditional couple show, followed by prize distribution.

In the painting competition, Taichan Ovung (5th semester) secured first position, while Ntsithung Ovung (1st semester) bagged second. In the extempore competition, Hachilo Ezung (3rd semester) secured 1st position, while Roslen Lotha (1st semester), from Bailey Baptist College, Wokha, secured 2nd. Mhabeni T Ezung (5th semester) was adjudged Best Debater. The debate competition winners were Nchunbemo E Ezung, Chonchilo T Murry and Mhabeni T Ezung, all from the 5th semester, along with Rhonthunglo Lotha of the 1st semester.
