Wokha: Plantation drives mark environment day

Various organisations, community bodies, student unions and government agencies across Wokha district observed World Environment Day 2026 through plantation drives and environmental awareness programme under different themes promoting environmental conservation and climate action.

At Tongti in the Ethungyo area under Yikhum Village, a plantation drive was organised by the Ethungyo community in collaboration with the Wokha Forest Division. The programme witnessed the participation of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Wokha, Wildlife Warden, Doyang, and the Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF). Tree plantation activities were carried out at Atongro Lankvu and Tongti Yakchi Lankvu, the two locations under the Ethungyo area.

A similar plantation drive was also conducted at Englan Village, where villagers joined hands to promote environmental protection and sustainable development through tree planting activities.

The Meshangpen Village Students’ Union, in collaboration with the Forest Department, also initiated a World Environment Day plantation drive at Meshangpen Village, encouraging community participation in preserving and enhancing the local environment.

Meanwhile, the Naga People’s Front (NPF), Wokha Division, in collaboration with the Forest Department, organised a plantation drive at Satsuphen Area along National Highway-2 in Wokha. The programme was held under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” with party members and officials participating in the plantation exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

World Environment Day was also observed at the premises of the Lotha Students’ Union through a programme organised by the Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA) in collaboration with the Lotha Students’ Union. The observance was held under the theme, “Inspired by Nature, for Climate, for Our Future,” highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship and collective responsibility towards climate action.

At Humtso Village, the Humtso Village Youth Organisation and Humtso Students’ Union, in collaboration with the staff of Humtso Primary Health Centre (PHC), commemorated the day under the theme “Healing Through Green: Plant for Health, Grow for Hope.”

The programme commenced with a prayer offered by Humtso Baptist Church Pastor, Bikhamo Yanthan, and was formally launched by Head GB Nyanthung Humtsoe. Speaking on the occasion, the president of the Humtso Students’ Union assured continued cooperation and collaboration with the PHC staff in future health and environmental initiatives.

As part of the observance, a total of 78 saplings were planted within the PHC premises, symbolising the community’s commitment towards creating a healthier and greener environment.
