
Imphal, September 30 (NNN): Three women hunger strikers who have been on a fast since August in support of the demand for a full fledged Sadar Hills district have been arrested by the police early morning Friday. The three women hunger strikers, Kimthar Lhouvum (55), Hatneng Khongsai (54) and Ngamthem Gangte (54), were picked up by Sapermaina police at around 8 am today as their health conditions deteriorated from prolonged fasting. They have been fasting from August 23 in support of a full fledged Sadar Hills district demand spearheaded by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) since midnight July 31.
The women strikers were arrested by Senapati police on Friday morning on the charge of attempt to commit suicide under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were produced before the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) of Senapati district and later sent to the Central jail. With this the number of hunger strikers arrested and jailed since the demand for a district status began has climbed to 7 including one man.
