Dimapur, October 18 (MExN): A conversation on women and green economy was held where the speaker Karuna Singh, country director, Earth day network said at the opening that, 25% of the consumer choices are made by women. Therefore it is important to make the women aware of what is green economy.
The women who were present and belonging to different fields came together and wanted the government to have policies to ensure that women can do their best in the field of saving the environment. The earth day network office in India was started in 2010, and has appointed Karuna Singh as the Country Director.
In the meeting the women wanted to make the people aware of global warming and how it can affect the lives of the future generation, so they decided to take up the topic in the gram panchayat, the dorbar shnong and other local bodies to educate the masses and create awareness among the people.
These women also discuss issues related to the Jaintia hills where coal mining has been a very important issue and it has affected the environment due to deforestation. Concerns brought up by the women in the discussion will be brought forward next year in the Rio 20+ summit, voicing the concern of the women around the world through Earth Day Network.
In the discussion Hasina Kharbhih, team leader Impulse NGO said, an individual cannot make a change but went they come as a group or collective response from the women on the concerning issue of the environment they can resolve the related issues. The discussion has also brought up topics on saving the trees for a green economy and also how women can speak out their voices and then the Earth Day Network will voice it out through various campaigns. She added; “what are the precautions to be taken in Meghalaya? The system and laws are not very coordinating the government also is not taking the initiative or responsibility.”
One of the member present in the meeting said, the implementation of environmental studies in the school curriculum as a compulsory subject is a good step to start making the student aware about the environment issues and how to preserve it.
Karuna Singh said, “Educating the people at the grass root level on how the policies should be in place and implemented is also very important.” Finally Karuna Singh summed up the meeting by making the women who were present to sign a pledge and carry out awareness where ever they reside.
