
Dimapur, March 31 (MExN): Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) organized a two-day state level capacity-building workshop on disaster management at A.T.I in collaboration with GoI-UNDP from March 30 to 31.
A press note received here stated that the inaugural session was chaired by Abhishek Prakash, joint secretary (Home) and the keynote address was given by Lalthara, chief secretary Nagaland. In his address, the chief secretary emphasized on the importance of disaster preparedness, prevention and mitigation measures. He stressed the importance and the need for capacity building to deal with any kind of disaster in the state. The chief secretary also added that the state still has to travel a long distance to achieve a correct response for dealing with any disaster. He assured that the State Government will mobilize adequate resources and provide all needful assistance and guidance to meet the requirements of NSDMA for better implementation of Disaster Management Programme in the State.
The note stated that the resource persons for the workshop included L. Singsit, special secretary (Home), Johnny (state project officer (SDMA-Home), Dr. Hovithal, state coordinator (ATI), Moa Lonkumer, associate professor (ATI) and Pikato (NEPED). The varied topics of the workshop included ‘Overview of Disaster Management and introduction to DRR and URR project GoI-UNDP’ by Johnny Raungmei, SPO.
A talk on ‘Disaster Preparedness- planning process’ was given by L.Singist, special secretary (Home), while a talk on ‘Perspective on Disaster and Climate Change’ was given by Pikato (NEPED). The workshop also discussed topics on ‘Disaster Risk Management Process’ /‘Disaster Prevention and Mitigation’ and ‘Linkages Between Disaster Management and Development’, it stated.
It also mentioned that J. Alam, home commissioner, chaired the valedictory Session. The Home Commissioner enlightened the house the recent steps taken by the State Government concerning disaster management during the valedictory session.
He further emphasized on the need of community participation and their capacity building through continuous training, media publicity, mock drills etc in a mission mode approach by the NSDMA. The participants consisted of municipal officials, officers of police/ home guard and civil defence and fire services. The NSDMA plans to collaborate with municipal and village councils for creating awareness through mock drills, other
related training programmes, workshops etc in the entire state.
