Mokokchung, June 12 (MExN): The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Mokokchung, under the Department of Social Welfare, observed the World Day Against Child Labour 2026 with a poster campaign and a task force training programme. This year’s theme, “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults,” guided the day’s activities aimed at raising public awareness and strengthening institutional responses to child labour.

As part of the awareness drive, DCPU Mokokchung conducted a poster campaign at key public locations, including the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Mokokchung Municipal Council Shopping Complex, car workshops, restaurants, dhabas, and petrol pumps. The campaign highlighted legal provisions against child labour and emphasized the role of citizens in reporting violations.

The training was held at the Conference Room of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Mokokchung. It focused on equipping task force members with knowledge of legal procedures, inter-departmental coordination mechanisms, and rehabilitation support for children rescued from labour. Officials emphasized that rescue operations must be followed by counselling, educational support, and family reintegration to ensure that children do not return to labour.
The programme was attended by representatives from various stakeholder departments and organizations, including: Senior Superintendent of Police, AssistantLabour Commissioner, Chief Medical Officer, Principal District & Sessions Judge, District Welfare Officer, District Education Officer, District Child Protection Officer, Urban Development Officer, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, All Block Development Officers (BDOs) and President, Watsu Mungdang.Samuel Kapu represented DCPU in the training session.
Officials present underscored that child labour violates a child’s fundamental rights to education, protection, and a safe childhood. They urged the public to view child labour as a community concern and encouraged citizens to report suspected cases through Child Helpline 1098, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The dual events reflected a coordinated effort by the district administration, the Labour Department, and civil society organizations to send a clear message,”childhood is for learning, not labour.”
