DIMAPUR, JULY 9 (MExN): The Western Sümi Students’ Union (WSSU) has expressed deep concern over the recurring devastation caused by floods during the monsoon season, attributing the continued suffering of citizens to the State Government’s failure to develop a proper drainage system.

In a statement issued by its President Ikato Khulu and General Secretary Vitoka N Rochill, the Union said numerous households are affected each year during periods of heavy rainfall, yet no concrete measures have been undertaken to mitigate the crisis.

“It is deeply disheartening that precious lives have been lost in the recent flooding that ravaged the region. Such tragedies could have been averted had effective drainage and preventive infrastructure been in place,” the Union stated, while extending condolences and solidarity to the bereaved families.

Referring to the establishment of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), WSSU urged the State Government and municipal authorities to act swiftly in addressing the long-standing infrastructural deficiencies. “A reliable and well-planned drainage system must be prioritised to reduce the risk of floods and loss of life,” it said.

The Union also appealed to the government to extend financial compensation to families of the deceased and those who suffered property losses due to the recent floods. “This is not a time for blame, but for unity, when we must stand together as a community to support one another and collectively work toward a society that guarantees essential public utilities and infrastructure for all,” the statement added.

WSSU further appealed to civil society organisations (CSOs) and the general public to remain united in demanding lasting solutions from the government, rather than merely reacting after each disaster.
