The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Zunheboto, under Nagaland University, has intensified its month-long Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Farm Campaign) across villages in Zunheboto district, reaching hundreds of farmers through awareness and capacity-building programmes aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture.
As part of the campaign, KVK teams educated farmers on soil health management, integrated nutrient management, water conservation, organic and natural farming practices, and climate-resilient agricultural technologies. The initiative also focuses on reducing the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilisers and encouraging environmentally sustainable farming systems suited to the district’s agro-climatic conditions.
Addressing participants during a Sarpanch Sammelan, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Zunheboto, Dr Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, said the campaign was more than an awareness programme.
“The Khet Bachao Abhiyan is a collective call to action for farmers, village institutions and youth to safeguard agriculture and ensure long-term food security. The future of rural prosperity lies in sustainable and profitable farming systems supported by scientific knowledge and community participation,” he said.
Dr Chaurasia said KVK has so far covered 16 villages through activities including Sarpanch Sammelans, field demonstrations in villages and at the KVK farm, and distribution of fruit plant saplings, bio-fertilisers and bio-pesticides. More than 1,800 farmers have benefited from the campaign so far.
The campaign is part of a nationwide initiative launched by the Government of India under the theme “Healthy Soil, Healthy Crop, Prosperous Farmer.” Being implemented from June 1 to 30, the programme seeks to promote balanced and judicious use of fertilisers, improve soil health, encourage sustainable nutrient management practices and accelerate the adoption of natural farming.
Through field demonstrations and awareness programmes, the campaign disseminates information on green manure, organic manure, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), biological products and sustainable agricultural practices. It also aims to reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers while improving long-term soil fertility and farm productivity.
The nationwide campaign is being implemented through a coordinated effort involving ICAR institutes, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Central and State Agricultural Universities, State Agriculture Departments and other stakeholders to promote a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector across the country.
