Zeliangrong students reiterate AFSPA repeal

Dimapur, June 30 (MExN): The All Zeliangrong Students’ Union of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland reiterates to the Prime Minister of India that the draconian Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) must be revoked from the North East region. A memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister of India from the students’ union also highlighted demands associated with the presence of the Indian military’s in the region.
The organization said it would wait for ‘positive response from the Government of Indian until July 15. Failing to meet the demands would attract agitations till the demand are fulfilled, the union said.
Earlier the organization had written a letter addressed to Dr. Manmohan Singh on March 24 in connection with ‘high handedness of the Indian security and paramilitary including Assam Rifles in the Zeliangrong areas.’ The memorandum had also demanded “immediate transfer” of 11-AR from the Zeliangrong areas, removal of ‘unnecessary security checks post/gates’ on national highway, district highway and inter-village roads action against high handed Col. Chonkar of 11-AR and 24-hours free movement of vehicles in the areas.
“We have been expecting positive outcome from the GoI on the above mentioned charters of demand. That it was reported in the local dailies of Manipur that the MHA had invited report from the GoM on the high handedness and excesses of the 11-AR. Another report was the Director General of Assam Rifles has also conducted an enquiry into the high handedness of the 11-AR etc., in Zeliangrong areas and Tamenglong district,” the union stated.
Despite strong protests against the high handedness of security forces in Zeliangrong areas, the AZSU stated, they have become more aggressive and abusive to the innocent public. The union highlighted what it says is ‘fresh excessive harassment’ in the Zeliangrong areas. “That, Indian Army based in Assam had crossed to Manipur and harassed the innocent villagers of Katiang a Zeliangrong (Zeme) village Tamenglong district which is located at Assam-Manipur Border,” the union said. It also mentioned several other incidents pointing to alleged highhandedness of the Indian military.
The union said it has no other options except resorting to “democratic forms of agitation to draw the attention of the GoI and all authorities concerned till our charter of demand is fulfilled.”
