Zhavame, March 9 (MExN): In the past, while men tended to neglect women in jobs and leadership and job reservations were demanded, former minister and executive member of Senior Citizens Association of Nagaland (SCAN), Deo Nukhu said, “Now the reverse is taking place especially in the teaching profession where women teachers are outnumbering men teachers at all levels.”
Addressing the International Women's Day celebration of the Zhavame Women Society at the Public Ampitheatre (Pame Tsüdu) on Friday, he also observed that in the recent years, in the education sector, the enrolment of girls are outnumbering boys at the school and college levels. “Women are also overtaking men when it comes to jobs,” he stated.
In the present day, he underscored that “by and large, women are the largest contributors to family income particularly in rural areas.” He went on to state that, “without women, men alone cannot effectively improve rural livelihood in growing vegetables, fruits and other cash crops and also rearing of livestock.”
He further expressed his desire for Zhavame village to be an economically independent village. As an organic village, he exuded hope for Zhavame to be agriculturally rich, particularly through the women community who, he added, can play a crucial role in achieving this goal. He also cited several crops that can be cultivated in a large scale while pointing out that there is a huge demand for it.
He asserted that it a time to re-engage in paddy cultivation has also arisen as rice that is easily and cheaply available in stores is known to be detrimental to one's health. He further encouraged those families who have farmlands to rear livestock on a large scale and supply not just to Zhavame and neighbouring villages but also to towns and cities to boost the village economy.
All of these, he emphasized can only be achieved through the initiative of the womenfolk. In the meantime, he asserted that women play an important role in bringing progress and in this regard, expressed his desire to see the inclusion of women in every aspect of the society. He also urged the village authorities to include womenfolk in any decision-making body, support women leadership and also encourage them in their initiatives.
