ZSUN backs NSF stand on ‘Vande Mataram’

Peren, March 14 (MExN): The Zeliangrong Students’ Union Nagaland (ZSUN) has expressed solidarity with the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) over its opposition to the compulsory observance and singing of the Indian national song ‘Vande Mataram’ in official functions and educational institutions.

In a press release, the ZSUN categorically asserted that neither patriotism cannot be “forced” nor can loyalty to a nation be created through “compulsion” and maintained that mandating the singing of a particular national song in academic and official spaces undermines democratic values and individual freedom.

The union further contended that such directives disregard the constitutional safeguards provided under Article 371(A) and overlook the distinct socio-cultural and customary identity of the Naga people.

In this regard, ZSUN called on schools, colleges and educational institutions across Nagaland, particularly in Peren district, to exercise prudence and refrain from implementing any directive mandating the singing or playing of Vande Mataram, while respecting the sentiments of the Naga people.

The union also appealed to educational institutions to observe symbolic and peaceful demonstrations on March 16, 2026, to express opposition to the directive.

Further, ZSUN directed its federating units and subordinate bodies to remain vigilant on the issue and report any developments so that the student community could respond collectively.

Reaffirming its position, the union stated that it stands with the student fraternity in defending the dignity, constitutional rights and cultural identity of the Naga people.
